Patti Page is one of America’s true musical icons. In the course of her seven-decade recording career, she has become a living legend by selling more than 100 million records, making her one of the biggest selling female recording artists in history.

Patti’s silky-smooth voice engulfed the airwaves during the ‘50s and ‘60s, providing her with a staggering 111 hits, 15 gold records and four gold albums. 패티 페이지(Patti Page, 1927년 11월 8일 ~ 2013년 1월 )

1950~60년대 미국 ‘왈츠의 여왕’으로 불린 패티 페이지가 1일(현지시간) 사망했다고 AFP통신이 보도했다. 항년 85세.

페이지의 대변인 마이클 글린은 “페이지가 1일 저녁 남부 캘리포니아주 엔시니타스 요양시설에서 숨을 거뒀다”며 “수년간 지병을 앓다 심장기능이 저하돼 사망한 것으로 추정된다”고 말했다.

클라라 앤 파울러가 본명인 그는 1927년 오클라호마주에서 태어나 21세가 되던 1948년 머큐리레코드사와 계약하면서 가수로 데뷔했다. 총 50장의 앨범을 냈고, 이 가운데 19장은 골드레코드(50만장 이상 판매), 14장은 플래티넘레코드(100만장 이상 판매)가 됐다. 전체 앨범 판매량은 1억장에 이른다.

특히 1951년 발표한 앨범 <테네시 왈츠>는 지금까지 1000만장 이상 팔리며 그를 세계적 가수로 만들었다. 이 곡은 테네시주의 공식 노래로도 채택됐다.

페이지는 1991년 그래미 전통 팝 가수상을 받았고, 오는 2월 지난달 별세한 인도 전통악기 시타르 연주자 라비 샹카와 함께 그래미 공로상을 수상할 예정이었다. 페이지는 지난해 홈페이지에 “심한 병마와 싸우고 있다”며 “신이 주신 목소리를 아직도 갖고 있지만 육체적 어려움으로 내 목소리를 수년간 사용하지 못했다”고 쓰기도 했다.
한국 가수 패티김은 패티 페이지와 같은 가수가 되고 싶다는 의미로 ‘패티’를 자신의 예명에 썼다.
